The picture depicts a woman and child standing at a tomb. The picture has religious significance as indicated by the inscription IHS (in latin, Jesus Saviour of Mankind) on the tombstone. The figures in the scene wear peasant or country costume. The figure of the woman holds the rosary which hangs around her neck. The child drinks from a bowl with a ewer on the tomb behind. We are unable to find this particular picture anywhere to make an identification of meaning or origin. However, it is possible that the woman is Mary Magdalene and the child may be an allegorical figure representing christ's rebirth and resurrection. The oval print is presented in its original gilt frame with heavy moulded floral decoration top and bottom. There are some losses to the gesso and gilding in places. The print itself is in good condition with some staining at the bottom and top edges and a little yellowing in the background sky area. The reverse of the frame is backed in paper which has deteriorated and is very fragile. None of this age related wear detracts from the appeal and charm of this lovely print.
