Victorian Black Glazed Chinoiserie Jug with Pewter Lid

£25.00

An elegant and unusual black glazed lidded pitcher dating from the late Victorian period. The pitcher, or jug, is fitted with a hinged pewter lid and beautiful Chinoiserie decoration.

The jug is the work of Samuel Johnson of Burslem and marked SJB on the base . This striking piece is made from earthenware and finished with a deep, glossy black glaze. On both sides, the jug is decorated with an ornate pattern of flowers and leaves in the Chinoiserie style, with hand painted details. The pewter lid is finished with a decorative knob for ease of opening. The jug is in excellent condition, with just some very minor losses to the gilt band around the base. The jug measures 17cm high and around 9cm diameter across the base, narrowing to 8cm at the top.

This fabulous antique piece could be used as a pitcher or creamer and would look great standing on a shelf or windowsill or displayed in a cabinet. A rare and collectible piece of 19th century English pottery.
