Victorian Black Glazed Pitcher with Pewter Lid

£25.00

An elegant and unusual black glazed lidded pitcher dating from the late Victorian period. The pitcher, or jug, is fitted with a hinged pewter lid and decorative handle.

The jug is unmarked but may be the work of Samuel Johnson (we have a similar jug by Johnson in another listing). This striking piece is made from earthenware with a handle designed to resemble bamboo, a feature typical of the Chinoiserie style of the period. Gilt banding has been applied around the body. The pewter lid is finished with a decorative knob for ease of opening. The jug is in excellent condition, with just some very minor scuffing to the glaze on one side. The jug measures 17cm high and 10cm diameter across the base, narrowing to 8cm at the top.

This fabulous antique piece could be used as a pitcher or creamer and would look great standing on a shelf or windowsill or displayed in a cabinet. A rare and collectible piece of 19th century English pottery.
